Massive forest bird. The western capercaillie is the largest grouse species in the world, and males can weigh almost twice as much as females. These heavy birds spend most of their time on the ground in forests across Europe.

Incredible courtship show. Male capercaillies are famous for their spectacular mating dance, where they strut and perform moves to attract females. This display is one of the most dramatic courtship performances in the bird world.

Ground dweller. Unlike many birds that nest in trees, capercaillies prefer to stay close to the forest floor where they hunt for food and rest. They blend into the woodland habitat where they live.

Extreme size difference. Male capercaillies are nearly twice as large as females, making them one of the most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism in birds. The size difference helps males compete with each other during mating season.

Spread across the north. Western capercaillies live across Europe and the northern Palearctic region, making them widespread throughout cool forest habitats. Some populations in central Europe are declining, but the species overall is not in immediate danger.
