Cool Facts
Brave ocean voyages. Sailors from Portugal, Spain, England, France, and the Netherlands set out on long journeys across unknown oceans to find new lands, new trade routes, and riches. These expeditions took many months or years and were super dangerous because maps were incomplete and nobody knew what they'd find.
Connected the world. Before this time, continents that were far apart didn't know much about each other. The Age of Discovery linked Europe with Asia, Africa, and the Americas, so people, goods, animals, and ideas could travel between them for the first time in history.
Trade exploded. Opening up new sea routes to Asia and the Americas meant Europeans could buy spices, silk, and other treasures they'd wanted for centuries. This massive amount of buying and selling created the first truly global economy that still exists today.
Empires were born. European countries used exploration to build huge colonial empires, claiming land and power in distant places. This shifted who had power in Europe and created new powerful nations that would dominate the world for centuries.
Maps changed forever. Explorers brought back knowledge of coastlines, islands, and lands that Europeans didn't know existed. This let mapmakers create much more accurate pictures of Earth and prove the world was bigger and stranger than anyone had imagined.
