Yellow Boxfish

Boxy body shape. The yellow boxfish has an unusual cube-like body that looks like a little swimming box, which is why it's called a boxfish. This funny shape helps it squeeze into tight spaces on the reef to hide from predators.

Bright warning colors. These fish are brilliant yellow with black spots that make them super easy to spot. The bright colors actually warn other animals to stay away, like a sign saying "Don't eat me!"

Toxic mucus shield. When a yellow boxfish gets scared or threatened, it releases a poisonous slime from its skin into the water. This toxic mucus can hurt or even kill other fish nearby, giving the boxfish time to escape.

Ocean traveler. Yellow boxfish live in reefs across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and they've even started showing up in the Mediterranean Sea after swimming through the Suez Canal. They've become unexpected travelers between different parts of the world's oceans.

Popular in aquariums. Because they're so colorful and interesting, people like to keep yellow boxfish in home aquariums, though they need careful care and plenty of space to stay happy.
