Element number 39. Yttrium sits right in the middle of the periodic table as a transition metal, which means it's really good at sharing electrons with other elements to make new materials.

Silvery and sleek. This metal has a beautiful shiny appearance similar to aluminum or steel, but you won't find it lying around in nature by itself because it's always mixed in with other rare-earth elements.

Hidden in minerals. Yttrium is almost always found combined with lanthanide elements in special rocks called rare-earth minerals, and it's the most stable form of yttrium on Earth.

Only one stable version. Out of all the different forms of yttrium that scientists have created, only one version called yttrium-89 stays the same forever and is found naturally in Earth's crust.

Powers modern tech. Yttrium is super useful in making things like LED lights, computer screens, and special lasers that help doctors and engineers do amazing things.
