Pictures come alive. When you spin a zoetrope and look through the slits, your brain stitches the still pictures together into smooth, moving action, just like in movies today.

Your eyes get tricked. The slits block your view just right so you see one picture, then the next, then the next, so fast that it looks like one thing moving instead of many frozen drawings.

A spinning cylinder magic trick. The pictures go around the inside of the cylinder, and when it spins fast enough, the magic happens right before your eyes.

A super old invention. Zoetropes became a popular toy in the 1860s, about 60 years before movies were actually invented, so kids back then used them to see animation for the first time.

Built the bridge to movies. Zoetropes taught people how animation works and showed that your brain can be fooled into seeing movement, which led directly to how cartoons and films work now.
