Acting means performing. Actors portray characters in productions like plays, movies, TV shows, and radio. They interpret the role whether the character is real or completely made up.

An old Greek word. The Greek word for actor is hupokritḗs, which literally means 'one who answers.' This is because actors would respond and interact with the chorus during ancient Greek performances.

Many types of acting. Actors perform in traditional theater where audiences watch them in person, or in modern media like film and television where cameras capture their performance.

Interpretation is key. Even when actors play themselves or perform experimental art, they still interpret the role in their own unique way. The art of acting is about how you understand and express a character.

Scrolls and scripts. In ancient theaters, the actor's role got its name from scrolls that performers would use. Today, actors study scripts to learn their lines and understand their characters.
