Cool Facts
Controlling the message. Public relations professionals decide what information to share with the public to shape how people think about a person or company. Unlike advertising, you don't have to pay for it to appear in newspapers or on TV if journalists think it's interesting enough to cover on their own.
Different from advertising. While ads cost money and clearly say someone paid for them, PR gets free coverage by making news that reporters want to write about. It's like the difference between buying a billboard and getting on the news because your story is actually interesting.
Friends with journalists. PR people work closely with reporters and news organizations to share stories, but they have different jobs. Journalists try to tell the truth about everything, while PR people focus on making their client look good.
Building trust and image. The real goal of public relations is to make people trust and like an organization or person by carefully sharing the right information at the right time. A good PR campaign can turn someone's reputation around or help a company seem friendly and caring.
Telling the story your way. Public relations shapes how events and achievements are presented to the world, making sure the organization's side of the story gets heard loud and clear before anyone else's version does.
