Almost all air. Aerogel is up to 99.8% empty space filled with gas, making it one of the lightest solid materials on Earth. It feels like touching a cloud made of glass.
Amazing insulator. Aerogel has incredibly low thermal conductivity, meaning it stops heat transfer better than almost any other material, which is why NASA uses it to protect space rovers from extreme temperatures.
Made from gels. Scientists create aerogel by starting with a gel (a liquid trapped in a solid structure) and then replacing the liquid with gas while keeping the solid framework intact.
Many types exist. Aerogels can be made from different materials like silica (which feels like styrofoam), polymers (which feel like rigid foam), and even carbon, giving them different properties for different uses.
Feather-light strength. Despite being mostly air, aerogel is surprisingly strong and rigid, so it can support weight without crumbling, making it perfect for spacecraft and scientific instruments.
