Fighting apartheid. The ANC started as a liberation movement dedicated to ending apartheid, a system in South Africa that treated people unfairly based on their race. The party worked for decades to make South Africa a free and equal country for everyone.

First free election. In 1994, South Africa held its first election where all people could vote, regardless of race. Nelson Mandela, the ANC's leader, was elected president, and the ANC won the election with strong support from South Africans who wanted change.

Running the country. Since 1994, the ANC has been South Africa's governing party, meaning they lead the government and make decisions for the country. Cyril Ramaphosa has been the ANC's president since 2017.

Symbol of hope. The ANC represents a powerful story of people working together for justice and equality. Their victory over apartheid showed the world that peaceful resistance and determination can create real change.
