Erasable and blendable. Unlike pencil or pen, charcoal marks wipe away easily, so you can erase mistakes and smudge lines together to create soft shadows and smooth gradients.

From light to dark. The same stick of charcoal can make delicate, whisper-thin lines or deep, intense black marks depending on how hard you press.

Works on almost anything. Charcoal sticks glide across smooth paper, rough paper, and even bumpy surfaces, giving you lots of choices for what to draw on.

Comes in different forms. Artists use both solid charcoal sticks and compressed charcoal blocks, each giving slightly different textures and control.

Needs a protective coat. Once you finish your charcoal drawing, artists spray it with a fixative (a special clear coating) so the charcoal dust won't smudge or rub off.
