Born from blending. Cumbia mixed musical styles from three different groups: Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Europeans, and Africans who all lived together in colonial Latin America.

Started in Colombia. Cumbia is said to have grown out of funeral traditions in African-Colombian communities, where people would gather to celebrate and honor those who had passed away.

Dancing and playing together. Cumbia involves both music and dance, with people moving to rhythmic beats played on drums and other instruments while celebrating life and community.

Spread across the continent. From its roots in Colombia, cumbia spread throughout Latin America and became popular in many countries, each adding their own local flavors to the style.
