A Universe Tree. In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is an enormous tree so big that it contains all of existence within and around it. The nine different worlds of Norse cosmology live in various parts of this magical tree, connected by its vast branches and deep roots.

Home to Many Creatures. All sorts of beings live in and around Yggdrasil. A dragon gnaws at its roots, a giant eagle sits in its branches, and a squirrel named Ratatosk runs up and down the trunk carrying messages between them.

Always Dying and Reborn. The ancient Norse people believed that Yggdrasil constantly struggles against harm but never completely dies. When the end times come in Ragnarok, the tree will shake violently but eventually survive and help the world start fresh again.

Where Gods Meet. Yggdrasil's roots extend to the home of the gods called Asgard, and the gods gather daily at the tree to hold court and make important decisions about the cosmos.

A Source of Life. Water from a sacred well near Yggdrasil's roots keeps the tree alive and healthy, and this magical water is so special that it gives wisdom to anyone who drinks from it.
