Special glasses needed. To watch a 3D film, you wear special glasses that let each eye see a slightly different image. Your brain combines these two images to create the illusion that you're looking at something solid and real, just like how your two eyes work in real life.

Big comeback in 2009. 3D movies were popular in the 1950s, but then faded away. They made a huge comeback in 2009 when the movie Avatar came out in 3D and became a massive hit that showed everyone how cool the technology could be.

Theme parks led the way. IMAX theaters and Disney-themed venues helped bring 3D films back in the 1980s and 1990s by showing off impressive 3D presentations that regular movie theaters couldn't do at the time.

Creative experiments. Some famous filmmakers got creative with 3D, like director Jean-Luc Godard who made an experimental 3D film called Goodbye to Language to push the boundaries of what 3D could do as an art form.

Popularity went down. After Avatar's huge success, 3D movies gradually became less popular with audiences, showing that even cool technology needs good stories to keep people interested.
