Trumpet-shaped blooms. Amaryllis flowers are big and showy with wide petals that open up like trumpets. They come in pink, red, and white colors and smell wonderful.

Grows from bulbs. Instead of starting from seeds like most plants, amaryllis grows from a special underground bulb that stores energy for the flower. You can plant the bulb and it will bloom again the next year.

South African native. The most famous amaryllis species, Amaryllis belladonna, originally comes from the rocky areas of South Africa's Western Cape region. It grows wild between the Olifants River Valley and Knysna.

Small family. Amaryllis is actually the only genus in its subtribe, and there are only two species in the whole genus. This makes amaryllis pretty special and unique among flowering plants.

Popular houseplant. Because amaryllis bulbs are easy to grow indoors and produce gorgeous flowers, people all around the world keep them as potted plants in their homes.
