Smallest bear on the continent. American black bears are way smaller than grizzly bears or polar bears, making them the smallest bear species found in North America. Despite their size, they're still powerful and can weigh 100 to 300 pounds depending on where they live and how much they've eaten.

Super widespread across forests. Black bears live in forests from Canada all the way down through the United States, making them the most common and widely distributed bear species on the continent. You're way more likely to spot a black bear than any other type of bear in North America.

Eat almost anything edible. Black bears are omnivores that switch their diet based on the season and what's available, munching on berries, insects, fish, plants, and sometimes small animals. This flexible diet is one reason they've survived so well and spread across so many different habitats.

Attracted to human food. Black bears will leave their forest homes to search for easy meals in human communities, getting into garbage cans and birdfeeders when they're hungry. This makes them one of the few wild bears that regularly interact with people, which is why many towns have rules about storing food carefully.

Surprisingly intelligent animals. Black bears can open car doors, learn where garbage pickup happens, and remember food sources year after year, showing they're much smarter than many people realize. Their intelligence helps them survive in both wild forests and near human settlements.
