Built for viewing. The word amphitheatre comes from Greek words meaning 'on both sides' and 'place for viewing', because the seating wraps around the action so everyone gets a great view.

Open-air entertainment. These venues were designed as outdoor spaces where crowds could watch plays, gladiator fights, sports, and other performances without a roof overhead.

Circular design genius. Unlike a regular theatre where people face one direction, amphitheatres have seating arranged in a circle or oval, so spectators sitting anywhere in the crowd could see the centre action.

Ancient Roman classics. The Romans built famous amphitheatres like the Colosseum in Rome, which could hold tens of thousands of people and hosted everything from battles to animal shows.
