Frame by frame magic. Sand animators make tiny changes to sand, then photograph each change one at a time. When all those photos play in a row, the sand appears to move and dance like magic.

Live storytelling art. Some sand artists draw pictures with their hands right in front of you while sand is lit from below and shown on a big screen. They tell whole stories this way, often with music playing along.

Light from below. Animators use special lights under the sand called lightboxes or overhead projectors to make the sand glow. This creates cool shadows and bright lines that make the pictures look extra special.

Stop motion magic. Sand animation is a type of stop motion, which is the same technique used to make claymation and other frame-by-frame movies that seem to come to life.

Sand as canvas. Instead of paint or pencils, sand animators use sand as their medium, pushing and smoothing it to create detailed images that look beautiful and dreamy.
