Oval shaped stages. Amphitheatres have a circular or oval design so people sitting all around can see the action in the middle. The name comes from Greek words meaning 'around' and 'place for viewing.'

Used for performances. People watched plays, musical performances, sports competitions, and gladiator battles in amphitheatres. They were outdoor venues where hundreds or thousands of spectators could gather together.

Ancient architecture. The most famous amphitheatre is the Colosseum in Rome, which was built nearly 2,000 years ago and still stands today. These impressive structures showed how skilled ancient builders were.

Gathering places. Amphitheatres brought whole communities together for public entertainment and important events. They were like the stadiums and concert halls we visit today.

Open air venues. Unlike indoor theaters, amphitheatres had no roof so performers and audiences were exposed to the sky. This made them perfect for large outdoor crowds.
