Anansi the Trickster Spider

A shape-shifting spider. Anansi is a character from Akan stories, the people of southern Ghana in West Africa. He's most often shown as a clever spider, but he's also a trickster who breaks rules and gets into trouble.

Wisdom through mischief. Anansi teaches lessons by doing exactly what he shouldn't do. His sneaky tricks and clever schemes show people what happens when you're cunning and selfish, even though everyone ends up learning something important.

A walking paradox. Anansi is fascinating because he breaks all the rules of Akan society where people value order and respect. Yet his rebellious stories actually make the culture stronger by showing people how to think critically and question things.

Star of countless tales. Anansi appears in hundreds of stories passed down through generations. These tales traveled with Akan people across the Atlantic and became part of Caribbean and African American folklore too.
