Three strings only. The shamisen has just three strings, which is what its name means in Japanese. Players pluck these strings with a flat pick called a bachi to make beautiful, ringing sounds.

From China originally. The shamisen came from a Chinese instrument called the sanxian many centuries ago. Over time, Japanese musicians changed it and made it their own special instrument.

Star of theater. The shamisen was the main instrument in Japanese kabuki theater and puppet shows. Its loud, dramatic sound helped tell exciting stories on stage.

Loud and proud. Unlike some delicate Japanese instruments, the shamisen has a bold, twangy sound that can fill a room. This makes it perfect for performances where you need to hear every note clearly.

Wooden treasure. The shamisen's body is traditionally made from wood, and the three strings were once made from animal materials. Modern versions might use different materials, but the classic design stays the same.
