Master of black-and-white. Ansel Adams became famous for his incredible black-and-white photographs of landscapes in the American West, like Yosemite National Park. His images show every detail from the brightest clouds to the darkest shadows.

Invented the Zone System. Adams and Fred Archer created something called the Zone System, which is a method photographers use to plan their pictures before they even take them. It helps photographers control exactly how light or dark different parts of a photograph will be in the final print.

Founded Group f/64. Adams helped start an association of photographers called Group f/64 that believed in 'pure' photography. This group wanted sharp, clear images that showed the full range of tones from white to black, with no tricks or special effects.

Protected nature through art. Adams was not just a photographer but also an environmentalist who cared deeply about protecting wild places. His beautiful pictures of American landscapes helped people see why these natural areas were worth preserving.
