Benjamin Banneker

Predicted eclipses. Banneker accurately calculated when solar and lunar eclipses would happen, and he published his predictions in almanacs that people could buy and trust.

Helped design DC. As a surveyor, Banneker helped measure and plan Washington, D.C., working with French engineer Pierre L'Enfant to map out where the city's streets and buildings would go.

Wrote almanacs. For over a decade, Banneker published his own almanacs filled with astronomical data, weather predictions, and useful information for farmers and travelers.

Taught himself math. With no formal schooling, Banneker educated himself in mathematics and astronomy by reading borrowed books and studying the night sky from his Maryland farm.

Wrote to Jefferson. Banneker famously sent a copy of his work to Thomas Jefferson, challenging him to live up to America's ideals of freedom for all people.
