Fighting for freedom. Abolitionists believed slavery was deeply wrong and worked hard to convince governments and regular people to make it illegal. They gave speeches, wrote books, and organized meetings to spread their message.

Grew over time. The abolitionist movement started picking up speed in the late 1700s and became really powerful through the 1800s, especially in Europe and North America. More and more people joined the cause as they learned about the suffering of enslaved people.

Worldwide impact. Abolitionists didn't just work in one country, they worked everywhere slavery existed. Their efforts helped lead to slavery being banned in many places, changing the world for millions of people.

Brave activists. Many abolitionists faced dangerous opposition from people who profited from slavery, but they kept fighting anyway. Some were formerly enslaved people themselves who spoke powerfully about their own experiences.

Changed laws. Thanks to the abolitionist movement's hard work and determination, laws were eventually passed that made slavery illegal in most countries. This was one of the biggest human rights victories in history.
