Keys you pluck. The mbira has metal or bamboo keys attached to a wooden board. You play it by plucking the keys with your thumbs to create bright, shimmering sounds.

From the Shona people. The mbira is traditional to the Shona people of Zimbabwe in southern Africa, where it has been played for hundreds of years in celebrations and ceremonies.

Many names, one sound. This instrument is also called a kalimba or zanza, depending on where it's played in Africa. Different regions have their own versions and names for similar thumb pianos.

Hypnotic and peaceful. The mbira makes repeating patterns of notes that can sound almost like a musical bell. Many people find the gentle, warm tones very calming and meditative.

Still played today. Musicians in Zimbabwe and across Africa still play the mbira in traditional music, celebrations, and spiritual gatherings, keeping this ancient tradition alive.
