Gnomes

Created by Paracelsus. A Swiss alchemist named Paracelsus invented gnomes in the 1500s as part of his magical ideas about nature and the elements. He imagined them as small spirit creatures connected to the earth.

Underground dwellers. Gnomes live deep in the ground according to most stories, making their homes in caves, mines, or secret burrows beneath mountains and forests. This is why they're often found guarding treasures or gems.

Tiny humanoids. Gnomes look like very small humans, usually only a few feet tall with full-grown features like beards and expressive faces. They wear clothes and use tools just like regular people do.

Story shapeshifters. Different authors and artists have described gnomes in wildly different ways depending on their own imagination, from wise forest keepers to mischievous tricksters. There's no single 'correct' way a gnome has to look or act.

Magic and alchemy. Gnomes fit into Paracelsus's system of magical creatures that represented different natural forces and elements. Over time, fantasy writers made gnomes even more popular in books and games.
