Kennedy's bold goal. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged America to land people on the Moon and bring them back safely before the decade ended. This inspired the entire Apollo program and gave it a clear, exciting mission.

First humans on Moon. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon and astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on another world. This incredible achievement was watched by millions of people around the globe.

Built on earlier work. Apollo didn't happen overnight. It came after Project Mercury (which sent astronauts into space for the first time) and Project Gemini (which taught astronauts how to work in pairs and perform tricky maneuvers).

Teams of astronauts. Many brave astronauts trained and flew on Apollo missions, not just the famous Moon walkers. Engineers, scientists, and thousands of workers on Earth also made the Moon landings possible through years of hard work.
