Double-hulled canoes. Polynesians built amazing ships made of two large canoes lashed side by side. The space between them held food, water, hunting gear, and nets for incredibly long ocean voyages.

Reading the stars. Instead of maps and compasses, Polynesian navigators used the positions of stars, sun, and moon to find their way across thousands of kilometers of open ocean.

Ocean swell patterns. Skilled navigators watched how ocean waves and swells moved in different patterns, and they noticed which birds and fish appeared near land. These clues helped them find new islands.

Island hopping solution. When an island ran low on food, water, and other resources, its people packed their canoes and sailed to discover new islands where they could survive and build communities.

Knowledge passed down. Polynesian navigators didn't write anything down. Instead, they memorized amazing amounts of information about stars, winds, and ocean patterns through stories and traditions shared from one generation to the next.
