Blocks incoming attacks. Shields are held in your hand to intercept weapons like spears, swords, and arrows. They can protect you both by actively blocking attacks and by just standing between you and your enemy.
Active and passive defense. You can use a shield in two ways: actively swinging it to block incoming strikes, or passively holding it in front of you to stop attacks from reaching your body. Both strategies keep you safer in combat.
Stops projectiles too. Shields aren't just for close-range weapons like spears. They also protect you from long-range attacks such as arrows shot from bows, making them useful in many different types of battles.
Worn by one person. A shield is personal armor that one warrior carries. It can be held with just your hand or strapped to your wrist or forearm, depending on the design and how the fighter prefers to use it.
