Classical Athens

Democracy was born here. Around 508 BC, the Athenians invented a brand new way of governing where regular citizens (though not women or slaves) got to vote on important decisions and laws. This system lasted for about 180 years and became the inspiration for democracies around the world.

The arts flourished. Athens was the place where amazing plays, sculptures, and architecture were created. Some of the greatest playwrights and artists in history lived and worked there, making the city sparkle with creativity and beauty.

Philosophy was everywhere. Brilliant thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle walked the streets of Athens, asking big questions about life, truth, and how to live well. Their ideas are still studied and debated today.

A city-state power. Athens was a polis, which means it was an independent city that ruled itself and the surrounding region of Attica. It was one of the most important and influential cities in all of ancient Greece.

Shaped the Western world. The combination of Athenian democracy, philosophy, and art created a foundation for much of European and American culture. Many of the ideas and values we have today came directly from Classical Athens.
