A bold announcement. The Declaration of Independence explained why thirteen American colonies decided they no longer wanted to be ruled by Britain. It was adopted on July 4, 1776, by leaders called the Founding Fathers who met in Philadelphia.

Written to inspire. The document became one of the most copied and shared writings in all of history. People around the world read it because it explained ideas about freedom and equal rights that many found powerful.

Created in Philadelphia. The Founding Fathers signed the Declaration at the Pennsylvania State House, which was later renamed Independence Hall. This building still stands today as a symbol of American independence.

Breaking free from Britain. The Declaration listed reasons why the colonies felt they could no longer follow British laws and rule. It said the colonies were now independent sovereign states that could govern themselves.
