Messages in minutes. Before the telegraph cable, sending a message from England to America took weeks by ship. With the cable, the same message arrived in just minutes as electrical signals traveling through wires under the ocean.
Impossibly deep waters. The cable had to stretch across the Atlantic Ocean, which is about 3,000 miles wide and incredibly deep. Engineers had to figure out how to lay heavy copper wire on the ocean floor without it breaking.
Signals that travel far. The cable was insulated with special materials like rubber and tar so seawater wouldn't damage the electrical signals. Even over thousands of miles, the electrical pulses could still be read and turned back into messages.
Connected two continents. When the first successful cable opened in 1858, it linked Queen Victoria in England to President James Buchanan in America. This was one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 1800s.
Cables keep improving. The first cables worked but slowly and sometimes broke. Over many decades, people laid more cables with better insulation and materials, making transatlantic communication faster and more reliable.
