Strongest Safe Room. A keep was the most heavily defended part of a castle, designed as a final refuge where people could retreat if attackers got past all the outer defenses.

Started with Wood. The earliest keeps were built from timber and were a key part of motte-and-bailey castles that first appeared in Normandy and Anjou around the 10th century.

Upgraded to Stone. During the 10th and 11th centuries, rulers began building keeps from stone instead of wood, making them much stronger and more impressive.

Took Forever to Build. A stone keep could take more than a decade to complete because workers had to cut and fit together massive stones with great care.

Symbol of Power. Keeps were so important that they showed a ruler's wealth and strength to everyone who saw them, not just protecting soldiers but also proving a lord's status.
