Pulled by horses. Carriages were wheeled vehicles that used horses to transport passengers from place to place. They were the main way people traveled by road for many centuries, before trains and cars took over.

Fancy royal coaches. Some carriages were simple and plain, but others were super fancy with gold decorations, velvet seats, and fixed roofs. Kings and queens rode in elaborate ceremonial coaches to show off their power and wealth.

Before automobiles. From the 1500s until the late 1800s, carriages were how most people got around towns and between cities. Once cars and trains were invented, carriages became less common for everyday travel.

Still used today. Even though cars replaced carriages long ago, they still exist for special purposes like royal ceremonies, weddings, and tourism. Some people even ride in carriages as part of equestrian sports.

Open or closed designs. Simple carriages had no roof and let passengers feel the wind, while coach-style carriages had four corner posts and a fixed roof to keep riders dry and comfortable.
