Ruled for 505 years. Joseon was one of the longest-lasting kingdoms in world history, starting in 1392 when a general named Taejo founded it and lasting until 1897. That's longer than the United States has existed.

Capital moved to Seoul. In 1393, the king moved the capital from Kaesong to what is now Seoul, making it the heart of the kingdom. Seoul is still Korea's capital city today.

Expanded to natural borders. The kingdom's rulers pushed north and defeated the Jurchen people, expanding the kingdom all the way to the Amnok and Tuman rivers. These rivers became the natural boundaries of Korea.

Replaced an older kingdom. Joseon was founded after overthrowing Goryeo, the kingdom that came before it. The name Korea actually comes from Goryeo.

Created Korean culture. During Joseon's 500 years, Korean people developed their own unique art, writing system, philosophy, and way of governing that still influences Korea today.
