Built by People. Unlike natural rivers that form over millions of years, canals are dug and engineered by humans for specific jobs like moving water or transporting cargo by boat.

Calm and Controlled. Canals carry smooth, peaceful water flowing under normal air pressure, which makes them safer and more predictable than wild rivers with currents and rapids.

Transportation Highways. Before trucks and trains existed, canals were the major highways for moving heavy goods like grain, coal, and building materials across countries quickly and cheaply.

Water Management. Canals also help cities manage water by directing it where it's needed for farming, drinking, or preventing floods in dangerous areas.

Engineering Marvels. Some canals include impressive features like locks (water elevators for boats), aqueducts (bridges carrying water), and tunnels to navigate around obstacles.
