Four epic journeys. Between 1492 and 1504, Columbus made four separate voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. Each trip was a daring adventure into unknown waters that took months to complete.

Ships and navigation. Columbus led expeditions in sailing ships, navigating by stars and maps to cross the vast Atlantic. These voyages proved that European ships could make the dangerous journey across the ocean.

Connected two worlds. When Columbus reached the Americas, it opened up communication between Europe and the Americas for the first time in centuries. This led to the exchange of plants, animals, ideas, and unfortunately diseases between the continents.

Sailing for Spain. Columbus sailed under the flag of Spain and the support of the Catholic Monarchs, making Spain a major European power. His voyages sparked an age of exploration where many European countries competed to explore and colonize new lands.

Start of modern times. Historians often mark Columbus's voyages as the beginning of the modern era because of how much these journeys changed the world. The connections they created between Europe and the Americas shaped everything that came after.
