Built for the gods. The Pantheon was originally constructed as a temple dedicated to all the Roman gods, which is why it got its name meaning 'all gods' in ancient Greek.

Massive stone dome. The Pantheon's dome is made entirely of concrete and brick and is so perfectly designed that it has stood for nearly 2,000 years without needing major repairs.

Hole in the roof. At the very top of the dome is a circular opening called the oculus, which lets sunlight stream into the temple and helps hold up the structure.

Became a church. Starting in the year 609, the Pantheon was converted into a Catholic church and is still used for religious services and visited by millions of tourists every year.

Inspired architects worldwide. Architects have copied the Pantheon's design for important buildings all around the world because its dome is so impressive and beautiful.
