Bright and colorful. When runestones were first made, they were painted in bright colors to make them really stand out. Over hundreds of years, the paint wore away, so today they look gray and plain, but back then they were eye-catching monuments.
Found across Europe. Most runestones are in Scandinavia, especially Sweden, but Vikings left them in other places they visited and explored too. This helps us know where the Vikings traveled and traded.
Written in runes. Runes were special letters that Vikings carved into these stones instead of using regular alphabet. Each rune was made of straight lines because that was easier to carve into hard stone.
Telling Viking stories. Runestones told us about Vikings who died, how they lived, and where they went on their adventures. They're like ancient postcards from the Viking Age that survived to help us learn about this amazing people.
