The Nabataeans

Desert merchants. The Nabataeans lived in the hot, dry lands between Arabia and the Mediterranean Sea. They became incredibly wealthy by trading valuable goods like spices, frankincense, and myrrh across the ancient world.

Amazing city builders. They built spectacular cities in the desert, including Raqmu (Petra), which features incredible stone buildings carved right into red cliffs. These cities served as trading hubs where merchants rested and traded goods.

Powerful kingdom. Between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC, the Nabataeans became a major civilization stretching from the Euphrates River to the Red Sea. This large territory gave them control over important trade routes that made them wealthy and influential.

Trade network masters. The Nabataeans didn't conquer land through war like other ancient kingdoms. Instead, they built a clever network of trading posts and controlled the routes merchants used, collecting fees and taxes that made them rich.

Lasting influence. Even though the Nabataean Kingdom eventually fell, they left behind amazing architecture and showed how smart business and trade could build a powerful civilization in the desert.
