First written language. The Shang dynasty created some of the earliest written Chinese characters, which were scratched onto animal bones and turtle shells. These writings help us understand how ancient Chinese people lived.
Ruled the Yellow River. The Shang dynasty controlled a powerful kingdom in the Yellow River valley during the 2nd millennium BC, which is over 3,000 years ago. This area was the cradle of Chinese civilization.
Royal power and worship. Shang kings believed they could talk to gods and ancestors through special bone readings and sacrifices. They thought the gods and spirits guided their decisions about war, farming, and ruling.
Lost and rediscovered. For centuries, historians weren't sure if the Shang dynasty was real until archaeologists dug up ancient cities and bones with writing on them. These discoveries proved the Shang actually existed.
