Sacred prayer spaces. Every monastery includes a special place for prayer like a chapel or church where the monks and nuns gather to worship together.

Many buildings together. A monastery isn't just one building, it's a whole complex with dormitories where people sleep, a dining hall called a refectory, a library, and an infirmary for the sick.

Self-sufficient communities. Monasteries had farms, granaries, breweries, and forges so the monks and nuns could grow their own food, make their own beer, and craft what they needed without relying on others.

Centers of learning. Many monasteries ran schools and had large libraries where monks carefully copied books by hand, preserving knowledge through the centuries.

Helping neighbors. Monasteries often included hostels and hospitals where travelers and sick people could come for shelter and care, making them important gathering places for their communities.
