Gateway to the West. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 opened up a massive chunk of land, and President Thomas Jefferson encouraged Americans to move west and settle these new territories. This sparked one of the biggest migrations in history.

Manifest Destiny idea. Americans believed it was their destiny to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and this attitude pushed millions of people to leave their homes and head west looking for land, gold, and new opportunities.

From 1600s to 1912. The frontier lasted over 300 years, starting when Europeans first arrived on the East Coast and ending in 1912 when the last western territories became states. That's a lot of time to settle a whole continent.

Created American legends. The frontier gave us famous stories about cowboys, sheriffs, and brave pioneers that are still told in movies and TV shows today. These Wild West tales became so popular they basically define what it means to be American.

Shaped national identity. The frontier's legends and stories became so important to American culture that the Old West is now one of the most recognizable parts of what it means to be American around the whole world.
