Chain and clip. Pocket watches usually hung from a chain or leather cord attached to your vest or pants. This kept them safe and made them easy to pull out when you needed to check the time.

Intricate mechanisms. Inside a pocket watch are hundreds of tiny gears and springs all working together to keep accurate time. Watchmakers spent years learning to craft these complex pieces by hand.

Fashion accessory. Fancy pocket watches weren't just tools, they were status symbols that showed off wealth and style. Rich people collected beautiful watches made from gold, silver, and other precious materials.

Railroad time. Railroad workers relied on pocket watches to keep trains running on schedule, which is why accurate timekeeping became so important in the 1800s.

Replaced by wristwatches. After wristwatches became popular in the early 1900s, pocket watches faded away because wrists were more convenient than pockets for checking the time quickly.
