Stacked like stairs. A ziggurat is a huge stone building made of many levels stacked on top of each other, each one smaller than the one below, creating a stepped pyramid shape that you could see from far away.
Gods lived on top. The Sumerians believed their gods actually lived in the temple at the very top of the ziggurat, so only priests and the most important people in society were allowed to go up there.
Special gifts and offerings. To make the gods happy and convince them to stay in the temple, people left gifts like music, vegetables from their harvests, and statues showing respect and devotion.
Built long ago. Ziggurats were built in ancient Mesopotamia and Iran thousands of years ago, and some of the most famous ones were in places like Ur, Babylon, and Baghdad.
