Built for Movement. Roman roads let armies march quickly across the empire, officials deliver messages faster, and traders carry goods to distant cities. These weren't just any paths, they were carefully planned highways.

Built to Last. The best Roman roads were paved with stone or gravel and tilted slightly to drain rainwater away. This smart design meant they stayed in good condition for decades, sometimes even for centuries.

Carefully Surveyed. Roman engineers used tools and math to plan roads in perfectly straight lines when possible. They even cut through hills and built bridges and causeways over rivers and swamps instead of going around them.

Connected Everything. These highways linked cities, towns, and military bases across the entire Roman Empire, making it easier for the government to stay in control and for trade to flourish.

Incredible Engineering. Some roads were built on piled or rafted foundations over marshy ground, showing how resourceful Roman builders were. Footpaths and drainage ditches ran alongside the main roads to serve everyone who used them.
