Roman Forum

Central gathering spot. A forum was the main public square in a Roman city where people came to buy and sell goods, chat with friends, and handle important business. It was kind of like a combination of today's mall and town square all rolled into one.

Shops and stalls. Fora had buildings used as shops and open-air stalls called stoas where merchants sold everything from food to clothes. These were the busy marketplaces where ordinary Romans did their everyday shopping.

Built along roads. Many fora were built at remote locations along Roman roads by officials in charge of maintaining those roads. Often a forum would be the only settlement for miles around, and each one had its own special name.

Places to socialize. Beyond buying and selling, forums were where Romans gathered to discuss ideas, catch up on news, and spend time together. They were important social hubs where the community came together.
