Spoken by millions. Arabic is the primary language for over 400 million people living across the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

Written and spoken forms. Arabic has a formal written version called Modern Standard Arabic that people use for books, news, and official documents. People also speak local versions of Arabic that sound different depending on where they live, kind of like how English changes from place to place.

Part of a language family. Arabic belongs to the Semitic language family, which includes other ancient languages. It is part of an even bigger language group called Afroasiatic that includes languages spoken across Africa and the Middle East.

Many official varieties. The International Organization for Standardization recognizes 32 different varieties of Arabic. This shows how rich and diverse the language is across different countries and communities.

Ancient roots. Modern Standard Arabic comes from Classical Arabic, an even older form of the language. Speakers today see these as connected versions of the same beautiful language rather than completely different things.
