Curved power. An arch bridge uses a curved shape to carry heavy loads across long distances. The curve is the key to why it works so well.
Weight distribution. Instead of pushing straight down, the arch pushes weight outward and downward at the same time. The curved walls at each end, called abutments, catch all that push and hold it steady.
Less material needed. Because of how clever the design is, arch bridges don't need as much material as other bridges. This made them super popular for thousands of years, especially when people only had stone to work with.
Multiple arches. Sometimes bridge builders stack several arches in a row to create something called a viaduct. This lets them cross really long distances while keeping each arch at a manageable size.
Ancient engineering. The ancient Romans built many famous arch bridges that are still standing today. Their engineers figured out that the arch shape was one of the strongest ways to build a bridge.
