Nature's swirly lines. Art Nouveau artists loved to copy the flowing, curvy shapes they saw in plants and flowers. They turned these natural curves into everything from buildings to furniture to decorative plates.

Movement and energy. Instead of stiff, straight designs, Art Nouveau was all about making things feel alive and moving. Artists used twisty, whiplash-like lines that seemed to dance across the page or wall.

New fancy materials. Designers used iron, glass, ceramics, and even concrete in exciting new ways to create wild shapes and big open spaces. These modern materials let artists build and design things that weren't possible before.

Rebel against old styles. Art Nouveau pushed back against stiff, old-fashioned design that copied historical periods. Artists wanted something fresh and new that matched their own time instead.

Fancy period called Belle Époque. Art Nouveau thrived during the Belle Époque, a beautiful time in Europe from 1890 to 1910 when people were excited about progress and new ideas.
