Official currency. The Australian dollar is the money that everyone in Australia uses to buy things, pay for services, and save. It's also used by three independent island countries in the Pacific Ocean: Kiribati, Nauru, and Tuvalu.
Seventh most traded. In April 2025, the Australian dollar was the seventh most-traded currency in the world's foreign exchange market. This means people are constantly buying and selling it alongside other currencies like the US dollar and euro.
Held in reserves. As of early 2024, the Australian dollar was the sixth most-held reserve currency kept by governments and central banks around the world. This means many countries trust it enough to keep some of their money in Australian dollars.
Symbol and coins. The Australian dollar is often written as AUD or with the $ symbol. It comes in paper notes and metal coins of different colors and sizes, making it easy to recognize.
